Lymphedema Rehabilitation

Lymphedema is the build up of lymph in the tissues, mainly in the fat just under the skin, and is caused by a problem in the lymphatic system. Lymphedema is an abnormal collection of too much tissue protein, fluid (edema), chronic inflammation, and thickening and scarring of connective tissue.

Lymphedema is a serious condition. With treatment, however, most patients show a reduction in swelling, fewer problems with infection, and improved function. As treatment progresses, the condition continues to improve. Patients often enjoy a return to their usual activities and lifestyle. As an extension of the Cancer Rehabilitation Program, our therapy centers provide a comprehensive treatment plan that can assist patients in reducing, delaying and preventing the progression of Lymphedema symptoms. The program is designed to achieve optimal results using a multiphase treatment plan which consists of complete decongestive therapy and manual lymph drainage techniques.

Treatment Plan

Our multifaceted approach to treatment includes licensed and certified physical and occupational therapists with specialized training in the treatment of Lymphedema. Treatment is individualized to address each patients specific needs and will include the following:
  • Evaluation to determine the proper course of treatment.
  • Manual Lymph Drainage to drain the lymph fluid from the affected limb.
  • Bandaging & Compression to prevent fluid from reaccumulating in the limb.
  • Exercise to activate the muscle joint pump resulting in reduced swelling.
  • Sequential Pumping with state-of-the art pneumatic pumps to maximize the swelling reduction.
  • Assistance in selecting equipment and proper compression garments.
  • Education regarding long term self-care.
  • Follow-up treatment with evaluation at scheduled intervals.

How to Obtain A Referral

If left untreated, Lymphedema has serious pathological and clinical consequences. Ask your physician if you would benefit from Lymphedema Rehabilitation. A referral and medical evaluation are necessary to initiate treatment. This can be obtained from your physician.
